Nutritional Labelling

  • Nutrition labelling became mandatory for most prepackaged foods on December 12, 2005.
  • The Nutrition Facts table appears on food labels with a consistent look, making it easy to find and easy to read.
  • The labeling regulations, introduced in 2003, also updated the requirements of over 40 nutrient-content claims and allowed five health claims on diet-health relationships to be used on food labels or in advertisements.
  • A 5-year transition period ended in December 2021, introducing new labelling requirements to the Canadian food industry.
  • Together, the Nutrition Facts table, the nutrition claims and the ingredient list provide Canadians with more information to make informed food choices.

  • As of January 1, 2026, the next major set of changes to nutritional labelling will take place. As of that date, a special front of package symbol will be required on any food products which are high in sodium, saturated fat and sugars.  Whether it is help with a new printed casing, or just questions in general, our team is ready to help you navigate these new changes.
  • Details regarding the new Front of Package (FOP) requirements can be found here: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/nutrition-labelling/front-package.html
